  • We are not shy about saying that some tour experiences can be physically demanding. If you imagine sitting on a bus and watching the country pass you by through panes of glass, Sloan Tours may not be for you.

We hike, walk, and move throughout our trip. However, unless noted, our trips do not require extensive experience or training in hiking. And we lay our our tours to try and balance physical excursion with rest and recharging. If ever, you are concerned about the level of physical activity, feel free to reach out to our team. The beautiful part of our tours is that there are extensive opportunities for you to explore at a pace that is comfortable for you.

Note: Aside from the overall activity score for this tour, the itinerary will hold a daily activity rating. When judging the activity level of each day, we examine the essential elements of length, elevation gains, and the way types (paved vs. natural). All these elements determine the level of activity for each phase. We distinguish activity levels on a five-star rating from easy to moderate, intermediate, challenging, and very challenging.

  • Edinburgh, Fort William, and Inverness are among the most notable cities on tour.

What’s Included?

  • Two meals are included each day throughout the tour. While breakfasts are provided daily, we also include six lunches and four dinners during the journey.

To allow for greater flexibility, cultural variety, and the unique timing of our daily activities, not all meals are pre-planned. This gives you the chance to explore local fare on your own while still enjoying thoughtful, nourishing meals together as a group.

Vegetarian options are available for most group meals. Gluten-free options are generally available as well, though we strongly encourage guests with dietary restrictions or food intolerances to inform us in advance. If you have specific health-related needs, we recommend packing a few snacks or backup options to ensure comfort and consistency throughout your trip.

  • Enjoy ten nights in hand-picked, quality accommodations chosen for their charm, comfort, and proximity to each day’s adventures. We curate a mix of small hotels and self-catered lodges, offering a balance of local character and restful retreat.

Should you wish to extend your stay before or after the tour, we’re happy to assist with additional accommodation arrangements—reach out to our team.

  • All site admissions and featured experiences on the tour are included—no surprise add-ons.

Unlike many tours, even our more adventurous excursions are included in your tour package, including high-ticket activities carefully chosen to elevate your journey.

Our goal is to offer a truly unforgettable experience for every guest. If you have concerns about participating in a particular outing—whether due to a fear of heights, physical limitations, animal phobia, or other factors—please don’t hesitate to contact us in advance. We’re happy to discuss accommodations and help ensure your experience is both safe and meaningful.

  • All transportation during the tour is included—whether by van, coach, train, boat, or taxi. If it’s on the itinerary, we’ll get you there comfortably and reliably.

While our adventures do include walking, we’ve thoughtfully designed the itinerary to keep it minimal and manageable. Walking is only required where necessary, and we always prioritize accessibility and ease for our guests.

  • Wi-Fi is available throughout the tour and is complimentary in most accommodations and public areas. While connectivity can vary in more remote regions, you’ll have regular opportunities to check in as needed.

Although it’s possible to purchase an international data plan for your time abroad, Sloan Tours highly encourages their guests to unplug and be present, embracing the rhythm and beauty of the journey without constant digital distraction.

Having a familiar level of accessibility on our tours has an eroding effect on the guest experience, which is why we issue this warning.

  • Your guide is more than just a navigator—they’re your host, storyteller, and companion throughout the journey. In addition to providing seamless transportation, they offer a level of hospitality that sets this experience apart from anything else in the industry.

From home-cooked meals to thoughtful coffee and tea service during your self-catered stays, every detail is infused with care. This isn’t just a tour—it’s a hosted journey, marked by personal connection, generosity, and genuine welcome.

Please Note: Tipping is customary for travel guides and drivers, though tipping is not required. If you have experienced excellent service and wish to acknowledge your guide and driver at the end of your experience, a recommendation of $20 per touring day for guides and $10 per day for drivers, per person, is acceptable and always appreciated.

As part of the Sloan Tours experience, we strive to care for our guests with a heightened level of attention and consideration. This is a massive part of what it means to have a tour that is “set apart” from the rest.

  • Your tour package includes two airport transfers for your convenience:

Arrival transfer: Departing the airport at 10:00 AM on the morning the tour begins.

Departure transfer: Leaving your accommodation around 7:00 AM on the final day of the tour.

For guests opting to arrive a day early with our Day Zero option, please note that while the standard departure transfer on the final morning remains included, you will be responsible for arranging your airport transfer upon arrival.

Additionally, if there is a better time for airport arrival on departure day, we are only 15 minutes from the airport, and taxis can be arranged.

  • Flights are not included in the cost of your Sloan Tour—for two important reasons.

First, we believe you deserve the freedom to choose the most direct, convenient, and comfortable route to Edinburgh, tailored to your own schedule and preferences. Group airfare often limits that flexibility.

Second, bulk airfare purchases rarely benefit the traveler. While many companies mark up group rates for their own gain, we’d rather empower you to find the best deal possible.

That said, we’re here to help. Our team is happy to assist you in finding and booking flights that meet your needs. We’ll even scout options on your behalf. If you’d prefer to explore on your own, we recommend starting with Google Flights to compare routes and track prices with ease.

  • We recommend that guests consider the purchase of travel insurance prior to departure. A comprehensive policy can offer valuable peace of mind, covering unforeseen circumstances such as trip delays, medical needs, cancellations, or lost luggage.

More information—including guidance on what to look for in a policy—will be included in your travel packet. If you have questions or would like recommendations, our team is happy to assist.

Itinerary

  • Your Scottish adventure begins as we depart from Edinburgh and head northwest, journeying through a landscape rich in history and beauty.

Our first stop is Stirling, once known as the “Gateway to the Highlands,” where you’ll explore the cobbled streets and admire the towering presence of the Wallace Monument, honoring Scotland’s legendary freedom fighter.

From there, we continue through sweeping glens and along lochs, arriving in the picturesque Highland town of Fort William, nestled at the foot of Ben Nevis, the UK's tallest mountain.

Settle into your accommodations for a 5-night stay and breathe in the mountain air as we prepare for the journey ahead.

  • Wake up surrounded by the majesty of the Highlands and spend the day immersed in the natural beauty that defines this region. Today’s featured adventure is a scenic hike to Steall Waterfall, Scotland’s second-highest cascade, nestled deep in Glen Nevis. This trail offers dramatic mountain views, a suspension bridge crossing, and an unforgettable encounter with Highland wilderness—without the rigorous demands of climbing Ben Nevis itself.

Along the way, take time to soak in the crisp air, listen to the rushing river, and marvel at the untouched landscape that makes this one of Scotland’s most beloved short hikes.

There, we will enjoy a packed picnic lunch before returning to our accommodation for rest and reflection, and then going into town for dinner.

  • Today, we trade the mainland for Scotland’s mystical western Isles. Departing early, we journey via ferry to the Isle of Mull, a rugged land of sweeping moorlands and dramatic coastline. From there, we continue by ferry to the serene Isle of Iona, a place steeped in history and spiritual significance.

Visit Iona Abbey, the cradle of Christianity in Scotland, where St. Columba and his followers established a monastic community that shaped a nation.

After Lunch, embark on an unforgettable boat excursion to the remote Isle of Staffa, home to the world-famous Fingal’s Cave. Marvel at its otherworldly hexagonal basalt columns and listen as the Atlantic swell creates a haunting natural symphony within its cavern walls. Then venture on a 15-minute hike to the other end of the island to see the Puffins’ breeding grounds.

  • After several adventurous days, today invites you to slow down and savor the serenity of the Highlands. Nestled near Loch Linnhe, the village of Clovullin offers a peaceful retreat surrounded by wooded glens, glassy waters, and views of towering mountains.

Enjoy a leisurely local hike, exploring quiet rugged trails that showcase the hidden beauty of this area. Breathe deeply, reflect, and let the stillness of the landscape refresh your spirit. Later, unwind at the lodge, perhaps over a warm drink or shared conversation with fellow travelers.

This day is about rest, beauty, and reconnecting—with nature and yourself.

  • Today’s journey blends spectacular scenery with moments of deep history and cultural charm. We travel the stunning Road to the Isles, a most picturesque route, leading us through glens, lochs, and dramatic coastal landscapes on our way to the harbor town of Mallaig. Here, enjoy fresh seafood, ice cream, or a fish and chips lunch in this quaint fishing village.

Along the way, we stop at the Glenfinnan Viaduct, which sweeps across the valley in cinematic grandeur. Nearby, we’ll visit the peaceful Saint Mary & Saint Finnan Church, a hidden gem with breathtaking views of Loch Shiel.

Return to Fort William in the late afternoon for a relaxed evening of shopping and a group dinner before preparing for our trip northbound.

  • Today, we head north into the heart of the Scottish Highlands, where myth and beauty converge.

Our first stop is the legendary Loch Ness, with its dark, mysterious waters and the enduring legend of Nessie. Here, we’ll visit the iconic Urquhart Castle, perched dramatically on the loch’s edge. Wander through the evocative ruins, soak in panoramic views, and imagine the centuries of history held within these walls.

After exploring the loch and its historic guardian, we continue to Inverness, the cultural capital of the Highlands. Enjoy a time of exploration as you wander the charming streets, stroll along the River Ness, and savor local flavors in its cafés and shops.

  • Today is a celebration of culture, history, and natural wonder. Begin the day in Inverness, Scotland’s Highland capital, with time to explore its historic streets and riverside paths. From there, embark on an unforgettable dolphin-spotting cruise on the Moray Firth, where bottlenose dolphins, seals, and seabirds thrive in the wild.

Next, we step back in time at Clava Cairns, a Bronze Age burial site steeped in mystery and made famous by the Outlander series. Feel the weight of history as you wander among standing stones and ancient passageways.

Our final stop is the romantic Cawdor Castle & Gardens, a fairytale fortress linked to Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Explore the castle’s opulent rooms and stroll through its lush gardens before returning to your Highland retreat for the evening.

  • Day 8: Coastal Castles, St. Andrews & Falconry Experience

Today, we trace Scotland’s eastern coastline, where history and drama meet the sea. Our first stop is the spectacular Dunnottar Castle, a cliffside fortress that played a pivotal role in Scotland’s story of independence. Wander its windswept ruins and savor the panoramic North Sea views before continuing south.

Next, we arrive in St. Andrews, Scotland’s beloved seaside town and “Home of Golf.” Here, explore the evocative ruins of St. Andrews Castle and the nearby St. Andrews Cathedral, once the spiritual heart of medieval Scotland. Stroll through charming streets, enjoy boutique shopping, or pause for a seaside photo at the Old Course.

To close the day, experience the ancient art of falconry in a private session that brings you face-to-face with majestic birds of prey. Learn the history of this noble sport, watch skilled demonstrations, and even handle a hawk yourself—a rare, unforgettable encounter before we settle in for the night.

  • Today, we journey to Edinburgh, Scotland’s crown jewel and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city’s skyline of spires and castle walls sets the stage for a day steeped in history and culture. Explore the iconic Edinburgh Castle, perched high on Castle Rock, and take in sweeping views over the city.

From there, wander the Royal Mile, lined with historic buildings, hidden closes, and charming shops. You’ll have time to explore Edinburgh’s museums—such as the National Museum of Scotland or the Writers’ Museum—or simply soak up the city’s lively atmosphere at a cozy café.

This evening, we will enjoy a traditional Scottish dinner accompanied by live music, providing a thrilling end to the day.

  • Our final full day unfolds in the tranquil beauty of the Scottish Borders, where history whispers through every stone.

We begin at Jedburgh Abbey, a soaring medieval ruin that stands as a testament to devotion and resilience during Scotland’s turbulent past. Stroll its atmospheric grounds and take in the grandeur of its Gothic architecture.

Next, we journey to Melrose Abbey, famed for its intricate stonework and as the resting place of Robert the Bruce’s heart. These hauntingly beautiful ruins offer a glimpse into the spiritual and artistic legacy of the region.

Our last destination is the magnificent Thirlestane Castle, one of Scotland’s oldest and most impressive castles. Explore its richly adorned interiors and then indulge in an elegant High Tea at the castle, a refined experience to conclude your Scottish adventure in style.

  • This morning, we bid farewell to the beauty and wonder of Scotland. After breakfast, enjoy a relaxing transfer to the airport for your return journey home. As you travel, carry with you the memories of misty glens, ancient castles, vibrant cities, and the warm spirit of the Highlands.
